At St. Marks we strive to stimulate our children’s curiosity in our Art and Design lessons. We achieve this by exploring the work of a diverse range of artists, crafts people and designers and we encourage our children to form their own opinions and ideas about them, and their techniques. They will also have the opportunity to apply some of these techniques in their own creations.
Our children will develop their own creative competencies across 5 main skill areas; drawing, painting, printing, collage, sculpting by having repeated opportunities to explore different media, and to develop and refine their techniques. They will explore pattern, colour, texture, tone, shape and line and gain confidence, knowledge and skills to experiment with different techniques and materials to create their own art work. They will have also the opportunity to plan, develop, evaluate and adapt their ideas, which is essential to their development as artists.
Our Art and Design lessons are largely linked to each year group's topics. They will be taught new skills and build on their existing learning, through well sequenced activities. There will be opportunities to work collaboratively and to reflect upon and celebrate what they have achieved.
We want to encourage our children to take ownership of their development in Art and Design, and we facilitate this through the use of sketchbooks as a place for children to record their observations, develop their techniques, ideas and their thinking.
We hope that some of our children may go on to be designers, artists or craftspeople of the future.
